Creating Parts Through FDM 3D Printing

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printing fabricates customized parts through a process of heating and extruding thermoplastics layer by layer. This versatile technology is ideal for both initial prototyping and functional low-volume production, offering a range of durable plastic materials.

While FDM is cost-effective, it excels beyond mere prototyping, serving as a robust manufacturing solution. With FDM, you gain access to thermoplastics like PLA, ABS, TPU, PETG, and PEL, with a dimensional accuracy typically within +0.5% and a lower limit of +0.5 mm (0.0196”).

FDM (fused deposition modeling) 3D printing creates custom parts by heating and extruding thermoplastics layer-by-layer. You can use FDM for initial and functional prototyping and low volume production in a variety of strong plastic materials.

While FDM is the most affordable 3D printing technology, it’s far more than a small-scale manufacturing solution. 3D printing with FDM means getting access to thermoplastics, including PLA, ABS, TPU, PETG and PEI, and a dimensional accuracy of ±0.5% with a lower limit of ±0.5 mm (0.0196”).

We Uphold Rigorous Standards in FDM 3D Printing

  • We produce your custom parts to meet rigorous manufacturing standards, ensuring adherence to The Rapid Prototype Network Standard. Our inspection reports accompany each order, verifying compliance with these requirements.
  • We maintain a consistent surface finish, free from bumps or delamination. Minor marks resulting from retraction and layer changes are considered acceptable. After printing, all support material is meticulously removed to achieve a uniform finish on supported surfaces.
  • All parts are printed with three outline/perimeter shells or a wall thickness of 1.2mm to ensure structural integrity and dimensional accuracy.

 Nachteile

  • Cost: Not suitable for intricate parts with very small details due to low resolution.
  • Lead Time: Visible layer lines require post-processing for a smooth finish.
  • Materials:  Parts may exhibit inherent anisotropy due to the layer adhesion mechanism.

What is Fused Deposition Modelling?

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a 3D Printing technology widely known for its great material selection, accuracy, possibility to print large parts, and affordability. FDM 3D Printing machines produce one layer at a time by extruding thermoplastic filament onto a build plate. The processing steps mainly include:

  • Slicing: Wandeln Sie das 3D-Modell mithilfe einer Slicing-Software, die den Pfad und die Einstellungen des Druckers steuert, in G-Code um.
  • Printer Setup: Load the printing material (e.g., PLA, ABS) and calibrate the print bed.
  • Setting Printing Parameters: Set parameters such as print speed, layer thickness, and temperature.
  • Printing Process: The print head heats and melts the material, depositing it layer by layer according to the G-code.
  • Cooling and Solidification: Allow the part to cool and solidify after printing.
  • Cleaning and Support Removal: Remove support structures and clean the part. Post-Processing: Perform surface treatments as needed, such as sanding, polishing, or coating.

FDM 3D Printing Service FAQs

Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) is a 3D printing technology that builds parts layer-by-layer using a thermoplastic filament. It is a popular additive manufacturing process known for its versatility and affordability.

Fused Deposition Modeling works by heating and extruding a thermoplastic filament through a nozzle. The melted material is then deposited in a precise pattern layer by layer, solidifying as it cools down, ultimately creating a three-dimensional object.

The accuracy of FDM 3D printed parts depends on various factors, including the printer’s capabilities, the chosen material, and the design complexity. Generally, FDM offers acceptable accuracy for most applications but may not be suitable for highly detailed or intricate parts.
